Fellow rods
Just a reminder if you have been abroad fishing in Scandinavia, Portugal, Spain, France and Germany you should take particular care that your equipment is disinfected before fishing.
Of particular concern is the parasite Gyrodactylus Salaris (GS) as it is deadly to Atlantic Salmon and also Trout. Getting rid of the disease is extremely difficult if not impossible. With this in mind anglers traveling from those areas known to be infected should make sure that their wellingtons, clothing and all fishing gear, nets ect. should be thoroughly treated to kill any parasites by either :-
1 Drying at a min temp of 20 deg c for at least 2 days.
2 Heating for at least 1 hr at a temp of 60 deg c.
3 Deep freezing for at least 1 day.
4 Emmersion in a solution suitable of killing the parasite for a min of 10 mins. Suitable solutions include sodium chloride (salt water 3%) sodium hydroxide or solutions known by their trade name as Birkon or Wescodyne.
You might think this is a load of bull, but beleive me fellow rods it is not.
While GS is extremely dangerous there are other deadly diseases that effect other game and coarse species as well. All it takes is one simple mistake and it will be in this country. Game over !!!!
